• DPT 9231 Professional Self-Assessment (2 cr.)

    This course is designed to enable each student to develop an electronic portfolio demonstrating his/her knowledge, skills, attitudes, understanding and achievement related to clinical practice, leadership, and interprofessional collaborative practice. Life-long learning and the responsibilities/opportunities related to professional development and the mission of the University of the Incarnate Word will be emphasized. Students will reflect upon their level of accomplishments towards achieving the core competencies required for contemporary physical therapy practice and the program graduate outcomes, and develop a mission statement and professional goals related to reflective practice, professional involvement, and contribution to the evidence-based body of knowledge through scholarly dissemination. Based upon a self-assessment of competencies, students will develop goals and formulate a plan for achieving them. The self-assessments, supporting evidence, reflective analysis, goals and plan will be compiled to form an electronic portfolio. The portfolios are meant to be a flexible resource to assist students to consolidate and present evidence of competencies and achievement. Each student’s portfolio will be unique and there is no prescriptive format – the content of the final product is yours to make. Lessons are developed to address each of these components in detail. There will be a considerable amount of writing, both in the self-assessment and the reflective analysis.
  • DPT 9238 Business Management Principles for the Physical Therapist (2 cr.)

    The purpose of this course is to help participants gain a better understanding of basic management principles essential to obtaining a competitive advantage in the physical therapy marketplace.Topics include the principles of strengths-based management, billing to optimize payment while remaining compliant, marketing to physicians and an introduction to customer service principles. This course consists of a combination of presentations, forum discussions, and submissions. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours per week on this content. Participants will develop sound marketing tools and strategies along with the initial skills needed to successfully use word of mouth marketing, social media, and e-marketing. Students leave this course having been introduced to the skills necessary to step into the world of physical therapy management.
  • DPT 9332 Physical Examination and Triage- Primary Care in Rehabilitation (3 cr.)

    This course focuses on the diagnostic process and clinical reasoning skills used in patient/client management and on the physical examination process in evaluation of the musculoskeletal, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, integumentary, GI/GU/renal and cognitive/behavioral systems in the adult. Participants will apply clinical reasoning to patient cases with an emphasis on the diagnostic process in physical therapy and indications for referral. It is assumed that, as experienced clinicians, students are familiar with musculoskeletal and neuromuscular examination principles.
  • DPT 9333 Evidence -Based Practice (3 cr.)

    This course focuses on the review of the key concepts of the clinical research process and critical analysis of the literature, the exploration of knowledge and theory development with application to practice, the examination of clinical reasoning and decision making models and process as it relates to evidence-based practice and assessment of patient outcomes. This course aims to facilitate the ongoing professional development of practicing therapists to develop a sound understanding of obligations and responsibilities of a profession, and enhance critical inquiry skills and abilities.
  • DPT 9334 Ethics and Law in Professional Practice (3 cr.)

    This course will focus on the ethical and legal analysis applied to clinical and administrative decision making in contemporary practice environments. It is aimed at helping healthcare professionals understand and act from a strong moral foundation first and then look to how the law may apply. Clinicians will apply ethical theory, legal and ethical concepts and principles in performing case analysis. Emphasis is placed on analysis, problem solving and deliberative judgment of complex practice problems.
  • DPT 9335 Health Education and Wellness (3 cr.)

    This course aims to facilitate the ongoing professional development of practicing healthcare professionals to develop a sound understanding of opportunities, obligations and responsibilities of the profession in the area of health promotion/education, to apply theoretical concepts of teaching and learning to practice, and to enhance critical inquiry skills and abilities. The students will be introduced to health promotion/education program planning and implementation, health risk assessment for health promotion, and community health education health promotion, and community health education/promotion planning based social cultural, economic and influences; introduction to epidemiological assessment and program evaluation.
  • DPT 9336 Pharmacology for Rehabilitation Professionals (3 cr.)

    This course focuses on the understanding of basic concepts in drug pharmacology and how those concepts apply to physical therapy practice. Emphasis is placed on the mechanism of action of drugs, pharmacokinetics, side effects and therapeutic use. Specific patient characteristics that impact drug action will also be stressed. The overall goal is to develop a knowledge base that will allow the physical therapist to better adjust treatment care plans for their medicated patients.
  • DPT 9337 Radiology and Imaging (3 cr.)

    This course covers basic principles and interpretation of diagnostic imaging modalities as they apply to the physical therapist. The emphasis is on plain film radiography, including basic physics of the imaging technique, viewing and interpreting films, radiographic anatomy, and clinical correlation with patient cases. Other types of imaging, including contrast films, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography will also be introduced.
  • DPT 9139 Capstone (1 cr. )

    As a capstone project to the DPT program, students will have to contribute to the physical therapy body of knowledge through dissemination (presentation or publication) locally, regionally or nationally of one paper written during the course of the program. For their CAPSTONE project, students are encouraged to take a paper submitted for one of the Post Professional DPT Program courses and develop it to the next level as a manuscript or abstract for submission to a peer-reviewed journal, a conference presentation, or a community-based project. Threads from all Post Professional DPT courses will be used to further develop the project.
  • DPT 9351 Directed Practice (3 cr.)

    In-depth experience in professional practice focused on proficiency and management of patients in a specialized field of physical therapy, didactic or clinical pedagogy, research, administration and/or health care management, or the investigation of a policy-related or ethical/legal issue. Partnership with a faculty and/or clinical mentor is encouraged. Students must develop a plan for obtaining advanced training or certification in a specific area of interest, and the plan should be approved by the Director of the Post-Professional Program. This course should be taken once the plan is approved and in place, or when the student is ready to complete the training or certification. Students who already have advanced training in a specific area, secondary degree, or previous certification should apply to have the course waived by following the Course Waiver instructions.
