As a physical therapy student, your success requires a balance — between professional and personal experience, community and individual growth, and remembering the importance of hard work and having fun along the way.

In addition to classroom study, our students have opportunities to volunteer at the Special Olympics, compete in interprofessional case competitions, help athletes with physical limitations, and provide care across the globe. Keep reading to learn just some of the ways our students are engaged at SoPT.

Serve

Students work with Go Baby Go Initiative, an international research project that provides children with special needs with opportunities for independent mobility, such as with modified toy vehicles.

Work

Upper level Doctor of Physical Therapy students contribute to the academic success of the entire program by working as peer tutors.

Immerse

Dr. Matt Walk leads a physical therapy team to provide care for the local community in Oaxaca, Mexico. Physical therapy students see about 250 clients in just five days.

Thrive

Each year, UIW School of Physical Therapy students compete in multiple sports against peers from other colleges across Texas in the Physical Therapy Olympics. We proudly hold the title of 2017 volleyball champions.

Student Organizations

There is a class government organization for each year in the program. Students are strongly encouraged to run for office.

Amber Trevino 18 and Sterling Gierczak 15 were among 270 physical therapists and students from 48 states who converged on Capitol Hill to advocate for issues that impact professionals, students, and patients at the 2018 APTA Federal Affairs Forum.

Student Special Interest Groups

Society of Therapeutic Rehab Students – Specifically for undergraduate students interested in physical or occupational therapy.

Special Events

The Academic Success and Student Affairs team provides academic support, offers student programming, coordinates special events, and serves as the liaison between the student and other university resources.

"The academic success and student affairs team has put on so many fun events for students this semester like Big/Little game days, de-stress fairs, a Halloween costume contest and a Thanksgiving potluck. With our busy schedules, these have been such fun opportunities to interact with classmates, professors and faculty to build a stronger community here at the School of Physical Therapy!" - Sarah McMillan '21
