UIW Welcomes U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary for Special Visit

UIW had the honor of welcoming Ruth Ryder, U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, to the School of Rehabilitation Sciences on Thursday, March 14. Ryder traveled from Washington D.C. to meet with UIW and Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) students who eagerly shared the work they had accomplished as the result of a $5.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Mental Health Service Professionals Demonstration Program that the two local institutions received last year.

Yesenia Anaya, a second-year learner at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), was one of the many students who participated in the third session of the Amigos en Medicina clinic on Saturday, Sept. 17. UIWSOM, along with the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT), Ortho-SA and CHRISTUS Health, provide free hip and knee arthritis evaluations for Southside residents in San Antonio at each Amigos en Medicina clinic.

UIW and TLU Sign MOUs to Establish Health Professions Pathway for TLU Graduates

UIW and Texas Lutheran University (TLU) announced they have entered into a series of memorandums of understanding (MOU) as part of UIW’s Health Professions Pathway. The MOUs pave the way for TLU students to further their education in four different areas of health professions by reserving interview slots for qualified students to have an opportunity to attend the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, the Feik School of Pharmacy, the Rosenberg School of Optometry, and the UIW School of Physical Therapy.

UIWSoPT Professor Completes Anatomy Training Program

Dr. Debora Kaliski, associate professor in the UIW School of Physical Therapy, recently completed the Anatomy Training Program (ATP), a program co-sponsored by the American Association for Anatomy (AAA) and The Anatomical Society. Kaliski completed the two-year fellowship at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) and capped the program with a two-week residency at the University of Cambridge in England.

Schools of Osteopathic Medicine and Physical Therapy Hold Follow-up Amigos en Medicina Clinic

In January, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT), Ortho-SA and CHRISTUS Health partnered to form Amigos en Medicina (AEM). Together they are providing free hip and knee arthritis evaluations for Southside residents in San Antonio. The second AEM clinic held in May partnered the UIWSOM, SoPT, Ortho-San Antonio, CHRISTUS Health and River City Produce to follow up with 12 patients, tracking their progress from the inaugural AEM clinic held in January.

UIW Set to Begin New Occupational Therapy Program

UIW is proud to announce the start of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program. Under the guidance of Dr. Ruth Ford, the first director of the UIW OTD program, the University will be seeking full accreditation in May 2023 and will start accepting student applications for the program in July 2022 in anticipation of the August 2023 start date. The doctoral graduate program is comprised of 8 semesters, 112 credit hours, that can be completed full-time in 33 months.
